# Autosave and restore

> Back up your work, recover a saved version, and resolve save errors.

Libre saves as you work. Check the save status to see whether your latest changes are stored on this device or in the cloud.

## Guest work stays in this browser

Guest drafts stay in the browser and device where you created them. Clearing site data can delete them.

To use a draft on another device, [save it to your account](/docs/get-started/account-and-signing-in.md#save-guest-work-to-your-account) or download its source and import it there.

## Back up and reopen the source

Open **Document actions** beside the animation's name and choose **Download source**. The `.libre.json` file preserves the editable document.

To reopen it, choose **Import** in the library and select the file.

## Cloud saving

Animations created while signed in, and guest drafts saved to your account, sync to the cloud as you edit. Wait for cloud-save confirmation before continuing on another device. A status of locally saved, offline, or pending cloud save means the latest changes may still exist only in this browser.

**Cloud save not confirmed:** check your connection and press `⌘/Ctrl + S` to retry. Keep the tab open until saving is confirmed, or [download the source](#back-up-and-reopen-the-source) before leaving. Libre cannot tell whether an unconfirmed save reached the server.

For a size error, see [Cloud document size](#cloud-document-size). For a different version saved elsewhere, see [Multiple tabs and conflicts](#multiple-tabs-and-conflicts).

> [accordion] Other cloud save errors
>
> * **The document format was rejected or the editor is out of date:** download the source, reload Libre, then try saving again.
> * **Saving is temporarily limited:** wait a minute and retry. Keep your source backup until cloud saving is confirmed.

## Saving on this device fails

Keep the document open and **Download source** before leaving. After downloading, check that your browser allows site storage and your device has free space, then try saving again. Do not clear site data before backing up your work.

## Cloud document size

The saved document, including images, must fit **10 MB (10,000,000 bytes)**.

If it is too large, download the source, then remove unneeded layers or images until cloud saving resumes. Editing can continue, but the latest changes stay on this device only if local saving succeeds. Other devices have the last version that fit.

The [import limit](/docs/get-started/import-artwork.md) is larger, so a file can import successfully and still be too large for cloud saving.

## Multiple tabs and conflicts

Work on an animation in one tab at a time. Wait for cloud-save confirmation before switching to another tab or device.

When another version has been saved to the cloud, Libre pauses editing. Choose **Download local work** to back up the version in your tab, then choose:

* **Save my copy:** save your local changes as a separate animation and continue there. Wait for its save confirmation.
* **Load latest version:** replace the version in your tab with the cloud version.

If the message says the editor is out of date, download your local work before reloading Libre.

## Recover an earlier version

For recent edits, use Undo (`⌘/Ctrl + Z`) or **History → Recent edits**.

For a cloud-saved version:

1. Download the current source as a backup.
2. Open **History → Versions** and select a version to preview.
3. Choose **Restore this version**, then wait for it to save. Choose **Return to current** to leave without restoring.

You can also copy a layer from the preview, return to the current document, and paste it. Cloud versions cannot recover guest drafts deleted with browser data.

If the document will not open, follow [Source file cannot open](/docs/help/errors.md#source-file-cannot-open).
